School history

The private school "Baltica College" founded in 1991 is one of the first non-governmental schools of St. Petersburg.

The idea of institution of "Baltica College" was embodied by its present director Lyudmila Nikolaevna Borisova, with the support of Director General of Lenexpo Alekseev Sergey Pavlovich, Director of company "Rus" Lyamkin Andrey Vladimirovich, Vice-Rector (now Rector) of the Mining Institute Litvinenko Vladimir Stefanovich, the Administration of Vasileostrovsky District.

Initially, the private school was conceived as a multi-level educational institution including even the stage of higher education. This concept was much appreciated by professors from Sweden, Finland and Holland. They gave lectures at the school and were ready to help in every possible way. It was at that time that the name "Baltica College" appeared. But the desire to create both a school and a university did not come true – the resource base was insufficient. Still, a strong team of pedagogues was formed.

The private school "Baltica College" occupied the 5th floor of the Officers' Club at Liteyny Prospect, 20 for twelve years. We were let to use the magnificent resources of that palace: lessons of literature by candlelight, festive events - September 1, the New Year, May 25; students' academic concerts, graduation parties – these events were held in Pink and Oak drawing rooms – the apartments of Nicholas II. The famous actors and musicians were invited.

The Commander of Leningrad Military District, General Seleznev S.P., his Deputy, General Pugachev N.V., General Pavlov Yu.M. helped to promote the patriotic education: the Health Days were annually held in autumn at Sertolovo shooting-ranges; the students handled the tanks (training vehicles) at the training centres, ate soldiers' porridge cooked by the field kitchen.

During the first Chechen war, wounded soldiers were delivered to the city hospitals by airplanes. The college students were the first volunteers to help them: they brought fruits, candies, homemade pies, corresponded with the parents of the wounded. They gave concerts to the ambulant patients. They collected clothes, toys for children from orphanages. The college students, brought up in the atmosphere of benevolence and consideration, are always ready to respond to any human pain. They laid flowers to the graves of our compatriots in Sainte-Genevieve-de-Bois (France): I. Bunin, V. Nekrasov, A. Tarkovsky, the Yusupovs and others with tender love.

During the summer holidays, the college students went on vacation to Italy (the Ligurian Sea), Austria, Paris, London and other places. They received students from other countries, organised joint balls, disco parties. Every student's birthday celebration, the Funny and Inventive parties, competitions, contests - all this makes the school life of every generation, forms the school's unshakable traditions.

All the children are taught the piano: the final academic concerts used to be held in the Oak drawing room crowded with spectators, where the second part of the concert was represented by choreographic dancing staged at choreography classes, the result of hours-long drill at the barre. All this has been recorded in the 25-years' newsreels of the "Baltica College" life.

Famous scholars have been teaching at "Baltica College": among them academician A.A. Korolkov, Vassoevich A.L., Schaub I.Yu. and others, native speakers from England and France. The Doctor of Science Vassoevich A.L. taught Latin; "Ave Maria", "Gaudeamus" in Latin were the hallmark of the College choir.

Why "Baltica College"? In what way does "Baltica College" differ from other schools?

Every private school is supposed to provide high-quality educational services that would be impossible without highly qualified teachers and a limited number of students in a stream. Every family chooses a school deemed appropriate by it, based on considerations of convenience of school location, cost of education, extent of comfort for the child and credibility of the teaching staff. The recommendations of friends are often important. It is known that there are schools preferring to gloss over the poor training of students and "make advances" to children and parents. They do not score unsatisfactory results, so as not to provoke conflicts. Meanwhile we believe that we may not inflate the grades, since the child must see the real results of his work and confirm them at the examinations – these tests are to be taken outside the walls of the school as well. Thus, we advise you to pay attention to this factor, when choosing a private school.

Our school meets all modern requirements for a private school. It is important to note that we take maximum responsibility for every child entrusted to us; for example, if a student is late or is absent from school, our secretary calls and informs the parents about it, the administration is in permanent contact with the parents, as we strive to be like-minded in the matter of educating children. It is no secret that students would like to avoid excessive - as it seems to them - control, as the urge for independence awakens early in young people nowadays. But eventually, as an adult, the child will inevitably appreciate the quality of education that parents were able to provide to him, because every day of his life he will see a difference in the level of cultural and mental development from his peers. Children from wealthy families often rely in many ways on the parents' financial assistance, which prevents the child from surpassing his parents and achieving own success in life, since he willingly uses the resources of the family. In a way, it is quite positive when a child maintains and develops the resource generated by the parents. Still, in our school, we always teach children not to identify themselves with the success of their parents and urge them to work independently for the sake of their future, laying the foundation for future success by grinding away at studies day after day. An important task on this path, we believe, is nurturing love for independent labour and discipline. No child can leave the school without coordination with the school administration during the school day, which excludes the possibility of smoking

A limited number of students in a stream (no more than 11) allows the teacher to work with each student and excludes the possibility to "hide out". The senior school students are preparing for the Unified State Examination under individual programmes, with an emphasis on the subjects necessary for a student, depending on the profile of selected university.

The school's policy is inviting a great number of interesting people for meeting with the students - politicians, officials, representatives of creative intellectuals, the people directly influencing the history of our country.

The teaching staff of the school is its crowning glory. Piotrovskaya Elena Konstantinovna (from the Piotrovsky dynasty - the guardians of Petersburg culture), Doctor of Historical Sciences, actively participates in the moral and cultural education of our students. The pedagogues of our school are highly qualified specialists: the Russian language teacher worked as a head of the Russian literature department at the university, the mathematics teacher has a rank "Teacher of the Year". In 1991, a philosophy teacher joined our school, known for his publications in university circles. The philosophy course has been designed for the students of all streams: the junior students study logical problems, sophistry, paralogisms; the senior school students study the history of philosophy, getting acquainted with various philosophical schools and theories. One can not underestimate such knowledge in the process of formation of a creative-minded contemporary-style personality.

We try to provide all-round development for our students; over the 26 years of the school’s existence, we have developed our own methods and found a unique pedagogical approach to the students. In addition, if the parents have any wishes, we are always pleased to find about them and take them into account.

Admission to the private school

The admission of students is based on an interview.

If there is a vacant position in the stream, a child spends a day or two with us, learning for free; after that, the pedagogues take a decision in the presence of the parents. A certificate of enrolment is issued.

After that, an Agreement for provision of educational services is signed. The parents (or legal representatives) submit the child's personal file, a record of current or final assessment marks, a medical certificate.

Extracurricular activities at the private school "Baltica College"

School life is not just lessons. The traditions of the school include numerous performances staged by the students and pedagogues. The repertoire of the senior school features "Masquerade", "Woe from Wit", "Fathers and Children", "Eugene Onegin" and other plays.

The actors of the primary school will captivate the spectators' hearts with spontaneity, organic playing, stunning costumes and scenery in the performances: "Bremen Town Musicians" (in English), "Swineherd", "Little Red Riding Hood", etc.

A long-term tradition is the whole school's taking guided tours on the last Friday of the month. The major theme of the travel is "The Ancient Fortresses of the North-Western Russia". The students have visited: Koporye, Vyborg, Old Ladoga, Tikhvin, Cheremenets, Pskov, Novgorod, Izborsk.

We visit the Hermitage on a regular basis, as well as the Russian Museum, museum palaces of the city and the suburbs, apartment museums of writers, composers, etc. Nekrasov's apartment museum has hosted a number of literature lessons where the students recited the poet's poems.

All the meetings held with the children and grandchildren of Marshal Govorov L.A. are memorable for us. Every year, on the date of lifting the siege, January 27, we receive the guests from Moscow – Govorov's descendants.

Organization of catering at the private school "Baltica College"

Providing due-quality meals is one of the important concerns of the school director. The children spend most of the day at school, so it is important to organize high-quality and useful meals for them. The breakfast and the lunch are delicious, home-style cooked. The varied menu satisfies everyone's taste: salads, the first course, the main course, fruit, pastry. Supplements are offered in unlimited quantities.
